Melinda attended American University in Washington, D.C., majoring in fine arts. She also holds a degree in Interior Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Entering her first juried art competition at age 21, at the Key West Art Center, she won Best in Show and First Place in Landscape Painting. Other first-place awards and honors followed, for watercolor and acrylic painting. She has participated in many group and one-person shows. She illustrated the popular Key West Calendar from 1971-76. Her work was exhibited in galleries in Miami and Washington, D.C., as well as in several galleries in Key West. In 1976 and 1977, she exhibited at the Foreign Correspondents' Club and the American Embassy in Hong Kong, and illustrated the Hong Kong Calendar for 1977. Moving to San Francisco in 1978, she continued to exhibit in several cities. She exhibited at the Arthur Godfrey Galleries in San Francisco and at the Bannan Gallery in Burlingame. She taught interior design drawing and perspective for many years at the Academy of Art University, West Valley College, Canada College, and the U.C. Santa Cruz Extension Program.
